Outdoor Photography magazine OP234 - How to take Awesome Mountain Photographs

28th July 2018
Outdoor Photography, it’s the only magazine I subscribe to and the only one I submit articles / images to.

I’m always humbled and excited when I have images selected for inclusion in the magazine. Usually they appear in the recurring Locations Guide section, and sometimes in the monthly challenge ‘If You Only Do One Thing This Month’, for which I am a two-time winner. It’s like getting a ‘seal of approval’ that my landscape photography is of a certain standard.

The ‘Holy Grail’ would be to write one of the magazines main feature articles but realistically I thought I had no chance as they are the preserve of the leading photographers in their field; those who are admired and respected by many and for good reason too.

So it was a huge surprise when the editor, Steve Watkins, contacted me in late May to ask if I would be interested in doing the main technique feature on photographing mountains for the September issue. After saying yes I was left stunned for a few days waiting for the brief to come through.

After receiving the brief I set to work on the article; 2200 words with accompanying imagery, all to a tight deadline and it was signed off by mid June, 6 weeks prior to publication.

It was a proud moment when the magazine dropped through the letterbox. My first feature article entitled ‘How to take Awesome Mountain Photographs’ for everyone to read. Steve threw in the Front Cover with my image from the summit of Goatfell, my first front cover too, as well as one of the Viewpoints of the Month, to make it the Simon Swales Issue, lol.
